Granite is renowned for its hardness, and it is precisely this hardness that we exploit for flooring and walls.
The most common finishes are polished or matt burnished. In the meantime, however, an array of new surfaces have emerged on the market.
One example of this is a satined finish, where the burnished surface is treated with brushes to achieve a delicate, soft appearance.
Alternatively, the flamed, or rough, surface is brushed until the colour of the stone is unveiled in all its intensity (after the flaming process, the stone loses a lot of its colour). Such surfaces are slightly rougher than satined finishes.
Unfortunately, no clear terminology has been defined for the new surfaces in the natural stone market. This causes problems.
The best thing to do is come and view and touch the stones in person. This is the safest way to choose your stone.
